SOWL

TORONTO - CANADA

Creating is Sowl’s way of self-understanding.

Sowl is a multidisciplinary Filipino-Canadian artist based in Toronto. As a member of the Filipino diaspora in Canada, Sowl has struggled to understand his cultural identity. By using his practice to study the history of his culture, he has replenished the knowledge of his people that he lost through displacement.

Sowl blends his heritage into his work by combining the ancient script of baybayin with elements of abstraction, realism, manga, history, western and eastern calligraphy, graffiti and nature. Mindfully exploring and expressing his heritage has lead Sowl to a greater sense of connection with his roots. It is this healing and placemaking that he hopes to share with the Filipino-Canadian community by awakening ways in which people can feel freedom in themselves and connect to their roots instinctively.

BEKAY

EDMONTON - CANADA

Bekay has been an active full-time artist in Edmonton for over 12 years, working with Lucid Dream Art Collective for the last 4 years. His European background combined with constant trips back home, Bekay was given mass sources of inspiration firsthand when he would constantly see Roman Renaissance sculptural works in city plazas, next to streets covered in graffiti, street art, and many languages of calligraphy, amongst the historic architecture. His lifelong love for lettering, sculpture, and graffiti, became the origin of his style, mostly based on the stark contrast between the past and present, and creating a fusion between the forms of modern and ancient arts. These ideas combined with aerosol textures and a variety of stroke patterns and color combinations, have been the basis of his canvas and mural work over the years as he looks to bring the feel and energy of European streets to North America through his art. Bekay has worked with clients varying from home builders to restaurants, to large-scale murals and canvases for private residential accent walls. No matter the size of the project, Bekay loves to fill large spaces to create monumental works portraying his colourful yet classical combinations.
