  • What are the dates of the festival?
    The festival celebration runs from August 15 - September 15 annually. Most of the murals will be painted during this time frame. Most of the public events and the annual block party will occur between September 1 - 15.
  • How do I get started and request a mural?
    Business owners who want to get a mural done can connect with our organizer team. We will set up a consultation to talk about the process and take in any considerations for your mural. We then work to align a budget, artist and proposal for your approval.
  • What is the mural process like?
    If you are looking for a mural. The process normally proceeds as such: Contact our team. We set up a consultation to examine the wall and discuss your goals and dreams for the mural. Our team then submits artist and mural concepts we feel matches the wall and your interests. Once selected, the artist prepares a concept for approval, once approved, we prep supplies and prepare a timeline for the mural. Most murals are scheduled to be painted during the festival window, mid-august to the end of September. If you desire to have the mural painted outside the festival window we can arrange that. The process remains relatively the same as above.
  • What happens after the mural is completed?
    1. Title of Ownership: Title of ownership in the artwork shall pass from the artist to the client upon the completion of the artwork. 2. Exploitation of the Work: Not withstanding the assignment of any advertising/promotion rights to the client, the artist shall retain all copyrights of the artwork. The artist shall be entitled to reasonable advance notice of any publicity or photographic reproduction of the work. As well as, be entitled to customary and appropriate identification as the creator of the work. 3. Maintenance of the Work: Client shall notify the artist promptly in the event of the need for any maintenance or restoration services so that the artist may have a reasonable opportunity to perform such work or to supervise or consult in its performance. The artist shall make any remaining paint and supplies available for maintanance and repairs due to vandalism. After one (1) year any future maintenance and/or restoration services need to be requested and compensated for by the client. In absence of any need for restoration or maintenance, the work shall remain free of alteration by the client, who shall take reasonable precautions to protect it against damage or destruction by external forces. (In the event of possible alteration or destruction of the work due to proposed renovation or demolition of a structure to which the artwork is affixed, the artist shall be entitled to notification, by the client, affording the artist a reasonable opportunity to document the artwork if not already done so. 4. Warranty: The artist warrants that the completed artwork will be fit and suitable for use and exploitation in the manner (and to the extent/and for the duration) for which it is to be created, but this warranty is conditioned upon the client’s compliance with the provisions hereof relating to the installation, maintenance and exploitation.
  • I have an artist and a wall. Can I still work with EMF for funding?
    Yes, we work with business owners and property owners to help manage, fund and complete murals that fit with our mission and mandates.

  • How many artists will you be hiring?
    Each year the festivals murals capacity changes. Traditionally we aim to select 5-10 professional artists who are a mix of local/regional/national/international.
  • What is your artist selection process?
    Artists will be selected by our Organizer Committee. Their primary considerations are the artistic merit of a portfolio, mural work experience, and composition.
  • Are artists paid for their mural?
    All artists are paid fairly for their participation in the festival. The festival covers the costs for all supplies and equipment. Each artist will be compensated based on the size and scope of their mural. Payment will be received upon the successful and timely completion of the mural.
  • Do you provide supplies?
    EMF provides all supplies and gear related to mural creation, including lifts, scaffolding, etc. Artists are welcome to purchase their supplies and be reimbursed for those costs.
  • When do I need to be in Edmonton?
    The main festival runs between mid-August to the end of September. Two weeks are normally required to complete a public mural.
  • What if I am painting a mural in Edmonton? Can I be part of the festival?
    Anyone who creates a mural that abides by the City of Edmonton's Public Art Process can be part of the festival and will be included in the festival’s mural map and marketing.
  • Will I need to create a rendering?
    Yes, all muralists that are selected for a mural must create a sketch and rendering of the mural. The rendering is for approval and is what we expect the mural to resemble. As artists we understand that things change and murals can vary from their original design. But the expectation remains the same that the rendering and the mural and as similar as possible.
